Slot Receivers – What You Need to Know

Slot is a position in football that is becoming more and more of an essential piece of the modern offense. These receivers line up just inside the offensive backfield a few steps off of the line of scrimmage and are often more versatile than their outside counterparts. They can be used in a variety of ways, from being a ball carrier on pitch plays and reverses to blocking for the running back on outside run plays. They are also used to create mismatches with defensive backs.

A great slot receiver has speed, excellent hands, and excellent route running skills. They need to be precise in their timing and have good chemistry with the quarterback to be successful. They are also an important cog in the blocking wheel for the offense, and they will need to block nickelbacks, outside linebackers, and safeties on many occasions.

They will also need to have the ability to break tackles and be a solid ball carrier on run plays. In addition to this, they will need to be able to run a variety of routes and can often be used as an extra deep threat.
